Matt Carey

Dr Matt Carey is a Consultant in Palliative Medicine with the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Training Programme Director for Palliative Medicine in the Thames Valley region. He completed his specialist training in London at Pilgrims Hospice in Kent, St Christopher’s Hospice, King’s College Hospital, and the Royal Marsden Hospital.

In his clinical role, Matt supports specialist palliative care services across inpatient units at Sobell House and Katharine House, as well as within hospital and community settings. He has previously led the Renal Supportive Care service and helped develop palliative input for the Myeloma and Early Phase Clinical Trials teams.

Before joining Oxford, Matt worked at University College London Hospitals (UCLH), where he helped establish the Oncology Symptom Control Unit, developing service standards and leading teams in complex care environments.

As Training Programme Director, Matt is dedicated to developing the next generation of palliative care specialists, promoting excellence in education, governance, audit, and research across multidisciplinary teams. Outside his clinical and educational responsibilities, Matt has a strong passion for innovation and quality improvement in supportive and end-of-life care. He also serves as a CQC Inspector for End-of-Life Care, committed to supporting the delivery of high standards in Supportive Oncology nationally.
