Sam worked in palliative medicine in both hospice and acute hospitals for 30 years before retiring from clinical practice. He was also professor at the University of Sheffield for 21 years. He adopted supportive care from 2000, specialising in pain and side-effects management in acute cancer care including stem cell transplantation and in cancer survivors. Sam is the Patron of UK Association for Supportive Care in Cancer.
